Ecological Consequences of Intraspecific Variation in Coevolutionary Systems

چکیده
The patterns and outcomes of coevolution are expected to depend on intraspecific trait variation. Various evolutionary factors can change this variation in time. As a result, modeling coevolutionary processes solely terms mean values may not be sufficient; one need study the dynamics whole distribution. Here, we develop theoretical framework for studying effects evolving two-species systems. In particular, build mathematical models competition, exploiter-victim interactions, mutualism which strength within- between-species interactions depends difference continuously varying traits between individuals reproducing asexually. We use analytical approximations based invasion analysis supplement them with numerical results. find that maintained if stabilizing selection is weak at least species. When under competition or mutualism, coexistence stable equilibrium promoted when mostly happen similar values. contrast, systems typically requires strong dissimilar exploiters victims. show distributions become multimodal. Our approach results contribute understanding ecological consequences by exploring its population densities distributions.

Ecological consequences of intraspecific variation in lake Daphnia
1. Although populations harbour considerable diversity, most ecological studies still assume they are homogeneous. However, mounting evidence suggests that intraspecific diversity is not only common, but also important for interactions with community members. Here, intraspecific variation in Daphnia dentifera in haemoglobin content is shown to be a marker of hypolimnion use. 2. Hypolimnion use ...
متن کاملWhat causes intraspecific variation in resting metabolic rate and what are its ecological consequences?
Individual differences in the energy cost of self-maintenance (resting metabolic rate, RMR) are substantial and the focus of an emerging research area. These differences may influence fitness because self-maintenance is considered as a life-history component along with growth and reproduction. In this review, we ask why do some individuals have two to three times the 'maintenance costs' of cons...
متن کاملLatitudinal gradients in intraspecific ecological diversity.
The increase in the number of species with decreasing latitude is a striking pattern of global biodiversity. An important feature of studies of this pattern up to now has been the focus on species as the fundamental unit of interest, neglecting potential within-species ecological diversity. Here, we took a new perspective on this topic by measuring the degree to which individuals within populat...
متن کاملCauses and Consequences of Intraspecific Variation in Nesting Behaviors: Insights from Blue Tits and Great Tits
Nest building is an important and yet under-studied stage of the reproductive cycle in many taxa, including birds, and whilst we have a decent understanding of interspecific variation in avian nesting behaviors, our understanding of intraspecific variation in nesting behaviors is much less developed. This is largely because an insufficient number of studies have been performed on any one specie...
